Whether you specialize or not, the ABPS requires continuing education and keeps up on the latest developments in order to renew their certification. Once you have achieved this step, membership in a prestigious organization as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Memberships as this further their education, research and networking with other doctors.
So, as you can see, your surgeon took a long time to get where he is today. But what makes this trip is very important. The fact that a doctor is a surgeon, does not mean he can be a plastic surgeon. When you are looking for one, make sure you have these credentials. Diplomas of their accredited schools and ABPS board certified to display in his office. If you do not see them, or ask if you are not comfortable doing that online research for their credentials.
While his plastic surgeon can have all the credentials and training and may even be a specialist in your procedure, not yet him a great surgeon for you to do. Do you feel comfortable talking to him about anything you do not like about yourself? Seeking cosmetic surgery can be embarrassing and often a sensitive issue. A good plastic surgeon will know and be able to set your mind at ease with a smooth and informative way.
